Satpuda Landscape Tiger Programme

Satpuda-Landscape-Tiger-Programme-Tigers are a conservation dependent species requiring large contiguous forests with undisturbed breeding areas. India harbors a significant proportion of the World’s tiger population in 17 of its States, due largely to good forest cover (678,333 km2, 20.64%), and a reasonable number (613) of Protected Areas (PAs) with a wide coverage, including 28 established tiger reserves and a further 10 under consideration. The tiger’s survival depends, therefore, on the protection of large landscape complexes, of which there are six in India: 1. Central Indian Landscape; 2. Eastern Ghats; 3. Western Ghats; 4. North-East Hills and Brahamputra Plains; 5. Sunderbans and 6. Shivaliks and the Gangetic Plain.

Central Indian landscape is the second largest tiger landscape with over 47,122 sq km spanning across major tiger reserves such as Kanha, Pench, Navegaon, Indravati, Bandavgarh, Tadoba, Melghat, Satpuda. The habitat is highly fragmented with varying types of users such as human settlements, agriculture, mining, roads, dams and other various types of developmental projects.

In 2005, BNHS with support from Born Free Foundation and wildCru of Oxford University stared Mobile Education Unit (MEU) as a part of Satpuda Landscape Tiger Programme (SLTP). Mobile Education Unit is working in the fringe areas of these reserves to create public awareness and develop people’s support for tiger conservation.

To achieve the conservation goals, education itself is not essential. Providing sustainable livelihood options, reducing natural resource dependency is also vital. Thus MEU also work as a facilitator between local community, park managers and other government agencies and schemes.
