Mudflats

These are formed mainly by siltation and river runoff. Narara, Diu and Gulf of Khambat in Gujarat are dominated by mudflats. The states of Tamil Nadu, Orissa and West Bengal also have excellent quality mudflats. The mudflats are highly productive ecosystems, and the most preferred habitat of shore birds which feed on burrowing molluscs, arthropods and worms. These habitats are also important feeding areas for Flamingos.
